Master Sergeant (Res.) Saar Margolis z”l

Saar enlisted in the Oketz Unit in 2004.

A few months into the training course, due to a medical condition that was diagnosed, he was regretfully forced to give up his dream of serving as a full-fledged combat soldier. Despite the disappointment, Saar chose to stay – and continued to serve in the unit’s operations department, where he excelled in his role and left a lasting impression.

The sense of missed opportunity at not being able to serve as a fighter stayed with him over the years – but also became an internal driving force for action. Saar took part in numerous security training courses, and for eleven years served as the security coordinator (Ravshatz) of Kibbutz Kissufim – driven by a deep sense of duty, responsibility, and calm confidence. He dedicated himself entirely to the protection of the kibbutz: he prepared in advance for infiltration scenarios, ensured that the emergency squad’s weapons were available in members’ homes, and even developed a unique lock for bomb shelter doors.

On Saturday, October 7th, at the outbreak of the terror attack, Saar placed his wife Yasmin and their two young daughters in the shelter – and went out to fight. After hours of combat, as he broke into a house where terrorists were holed up – alongside Staff Sergeant Adam Agmon, a fighter and commander in the Paratroopers Brigade – in a desperate attempt to save a trapped family, the two were hit and killed.

In his life and in his death, Saar led from the front – and acted in the spirit of the values he absorbed in the unit: dedication to the mission, pursuit of engagement, courage, and leadership.

May his memory be a blessing.
