The “Karlo” Fund for Dogs

“Karlo” Fund - The Assistance Fund for the Unit’s Retired Dogs of the “Leading the Pack” Foundation. The fund is managed by a professional committee headed by Dr. Yossi Wein, who will provide real-time assistance and advice to members of the veterans’ community who have adopted retired dogs from the unit’s service.

Why “Karlo”?

Karlo was Y’s dog, who participated in dozens of daring operations during his service. In 2012, after completing his operational service, Karlo was retired and adopted by Y.

Shortly after, Karlo began suffering from leg pain. Upon examination, an incurable cancerous tumor was discovered. Y received the devastating news about Karlo’s illness while in the midst of hiking the Israel Trail. As a gesture of honor and appreciation for the unique bond they shared, Y decided to build a special cart for Karlo. In this way, accompanied by his beloved dog in the cart, the two completed the trail together. A few weeks after completing the journey, Karlo passed away.

Y’s exceptional commitment to his dog deeply touched and moved all of us, symbolizing the special bond and dedication we have to our heroic four-legged companions.

The Fund Offers Two Tracks:

1. “Veteran Dogs” Track

Under this track, operational dogs who meet the eligibility criteria are insured under a medical plan by Chayuta, a branch of Shomera Insurance.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Operational Dog – A dog that completed training in the unit and participated in operational missions during its military service. The fund receives this information from the unit’s canine professionals and does not determine eligibility.
  • Healthy Dog – A dog with no pre-existing conditions that would prevent coverage. Final approval is given by the foundation’s veterinarian.
  • Under Age Eight – The insurance company covers only dogs who are under the age of eight on the date of policy entry.

2. “Senior Dogs” Track

This track provides financial assistance for non-elective medical treatments. It is intended for operational and retired dogs who, due to their age and/or health condition, are not eligible for the “Veteran Dogs” track.

Key Guidelines:

  • Operational Dog – As above, only dogs recognized by the unit’s canine staff.
  • Advance Requests Only – You must contact the professional committee before beginning treatment. Reimbursement is not available for treatments that did not receive prior approval.
  • One Assistance Grant Per Calendar Year – Each dog is eligible for one aid package per year.
  • Amount Covered – Up to 50% of the treatment cost, capped at 3,500 NIS, based on the committee’s decision.
