Staff Sergeant Micha (Michi) Gottlieb z”l

Son of Tzipora and Yaakov, and brother to Ilanit and Naor. He was born on 24 January 1977 (5 Shevat 5737) in Tel Aviv.

In early August 1995, Micha enlisted in the IDF. Upon completing basic training, he was selected for an instructional course at the Counter-Terrorism School at Adam Base, and later joined the Oketz Unit, where he served for eight months.

On the evening of 4 February 1997 (28 Shevat 5757), the Helicopter Disaster occurred when two Yas’ur helicopters collided over the community of Sha’ar Yishuv. Seventy-three soldiers and aircrew members, en route to an operational mission in Lebanon, were killed — among them Micha. He was twenty years old at the time of his death.

Staff Sergeant Micha was laid to rest at the Kiryat Shaul Military Cemetery. In March 2001, “Micha Area” was inaugurated in partnership with the Oketz Unit in Ben Shemen Forest, as a memorial site for the unit’s heritage.
